THE ACT

ACTorgIn the past we have talked about the SAT, which is the exam required by American colleges for admission to their Bachelor Degrees. The American College Test (ACT) is also a qualification exam required by high school graduates for admission to undergraduate programs at universities in the United States. For university enrollment purposes, the ACT is considered equivalent to the SAT exam. The ACT exam is now universally accepted and recognized by most American universities and is offered to international students in centers outside the United States.

If both tests are accepted by the university as qualifying exams, students can choose which type of exam to take. It is also possible to take both exams and, based on the result obtained, to decide which certification to send to the universities with the application.

The exam, provided by the American organization ACT, consists of four exams

tests: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science Reasoning. The total duration is four hours, including instructions and breaks. The score is expressed on a scale from 1 to 36.

In addition, you can also take ACT with a part of Writing (30 minutes) and the other four standard tests. It is a good idea to check with the individual universities to see if they apply for ACT with or without the Writing section. If a university requires ACT Plus Writing, it is mandatory to take and submit an ACT Plus Writing result.

How is the score calculated?

A student’s ACT score is the average of the student’s scaled scores for the four multiple choice test sections. Example: If a student scored 24 in English, 28 for Mathematics, 26 for Reading, and 23 in Science, his composite ACT score would be (24 + 28 + 26 + 23) / 4 = 25.25, which is rounded to a score of 25.

The results are available online within 2 weeks of the exam date. Score Records are normally released 3 to 8 weeks after each test date. If you have also taken the writing test, scores will only be released after all sections have been corrected, including the writing section, approximately 5 to 8 weeks after the test date.
